The Clog Makers by Ellen Wylie

Clogs were the normal footwear for many of the villagers, they were warm, practical and could cope with the puddles and dirty roads, as well as being beautifully made. There were excellent clog makers in Newcastleton and they were always kept busily employed,

Many were the tales that were told in “ the auld clogger’s shop” be it politics, football or brass bands.

Clogs were shaped to the foot and each foot was carefully measured. The best wood and leather was used. The soles were protected from wear with caukers.

Some of the cloggers were John Hogg, Jimmy Hardie, Johnnie Telfer, Sandy Inglis and four generations of Croziers.

Many pairs of clogs would be forwarded to those who had emigrated.

During the Second World War it was the fashion for a short time to have red, green or blue clogs and the Croziers ordered a few kits-they were most uncomfortable.
