The Bank by Sylvia Anderson

In July 1859 the British Linen Bank opened a sub-branch at Newcastleton under the Langholm Agency. It was open every Monday except when there was a Market Day or Fair Day when it was open on these days.

The manager of the Langholm Branch was Alexander Stevenson who once a week mounted his horse and rode across the Tarras Moor to do business at Newcastleton. We believe he also travelled by coach at some time or other but he never forgot to take with him his trusty blunderbuss or pistol just in case there might be a highwayman about.

A new bank was opened in Newcastleton at a later date. It is now a Bank of Scotland – the British Linen Bank and the Bank of Scotland having merged in 1971.
