The Sandholm Viaduct and Smiddy Brig By Dorothy Robson

The first trial run on the railway through Newcastleton stopped just short of Sandholm Viaduct, so it was later in 1862 when the bridge first came into use.

Along with the Smiddy Brig, completed in 1792 it must be one of the most photographed places in Liddesdale.

The “Kirk Train” from the railway village of Riccarton Junction brought worshippers to Castleton Kirk. It stopped just to the north of the Viaduct where passengers alighted with the help of a ladder.

The High Level Bridge was spectacularly blown up for safety reasons, on Tuesday, 3rd March 1987 watched by a large crowd of villagers and school children who were sad to see it go.
