The Old Parish Kirk by Ella Little

The old parish Kirk of Castleton was built at the confluence of the Rivers Liddle and Hermitage in 1808. The building stones were taken from the former church which was situated in the nearby churchyard – the site of a church since the 12th century. In 1808 the new site was chosen for the convenience of the congregation.

Adjacent to the church is the stable (and mounting steps) and above the stable is the schoolroom which also served as the Session House. On the wall, near the window is a plaque bearing the Latin inscription meaning ‘for god the church’, ‘today is for me tomorrow for you’.

This church closed in 1952 because of dry rot. The church bell, cast in 1765, was transferred to the present parish church in 1952 by Tom Grieve of Braefit, who was Session Clerk at the time.
