Castleton Parish Church by Percy Paton It was at the instigation of the Reverend W Vassie, B.D., that this church was built in the village. It was considered essential because of the increasing population and for the benefit of the elderly and those living south of the village who found it difficult to travel to the parish church two miles to the North.
The building began as a Mission Hall but finished as a fully equipped church named St. Johns, an addition to and not a rival of the Parish Church. It was opened on the 8th February 1889 by the Reverend Dr. McLeod of Edinburgh. Services were held in the Parish Church in the morning and St. Johns in the winter at 3pm, and in the summer at 6pm.
The stone for the building was gifted by the Duke of Buccleuch who also gave a handsome donation. This has been the parish church of Castleton since 1952.
