Newcastleton In Bloom Floral Project
The Floral Group is committed to horticultural excellence and environmental improvement.
We re-landscaped our fine War Memorial Gardens and rebuilt tree seats. Colourful displays bloom year round in a variety of planters throughout the village.
Planting the village orchard is progressing. Church, community spaces and the school now host various fruit trees. Specimen trees are planted annually.
Together, the school and Floral Group have planted thousands of crocus bulbs, erected bat and bird boxes, grown vegetables and created a bog garden.
Our annual Plant Sale and Coffee Morning, litter pick and Front of House Competition have proved successful in winning community interest and involvement.
We aim to refurbish the Park with a contemporary play area, flower beds and trees. A Flower Festival is being planned. Further details of our upcoming events can be found on our own website: http://www.newcastletonfloralgroup.co.uk/
Last year's success in the Beautiful Scotland and Floral Gateway competitions resulted in the village being honoured with an invitation to enter the Britian in Bloom competition 2011.
The Newcastleton Floral Group was originally created in 2008 with the aim of "Bringing our Community together and appreciating our Village". The group has been delighted by the community's support for their efforts and initiatives so far.
"The satisfaction and the pleasure we have experienced from our ventures have motivated us to sustain and develop our projects for Copshaw Holm's enhancement."
With the assistance of a grant of £2,500 funded by Scottish Borders Council Grant Scheme, the Floral Group has replaced the tree seats in all three squares and in partnership with the LLAGs, has worked hard to improve the Park facilities by acquiring new picnic tables, replacing the old goal posts and instigating better fencing and self-shutting gates between the play area and the road. A parrot litter bin has been placed in the Park to encourage our children to care for the Village’s environment.
There are many community groups involved in the provision and planting up of public displays and flower beds around the village. Fund raising events are held to help with the costs of the projects and sponsorship is a vital support. An August competition is held annually for best residential front of house planting and best group/commercial displays. SILVER awards have been achieved by the Village in both the Floral Gateway and Beautiful Scotland competitions in 2008 and 2009 and GOLD in 2010. In 2011, Newcastleton was awarded a Silver Gilt in the Britain in Bloom competition and achieved highly commended in Floral Gateway's Champion of Champions.
We are extremely proud of our community’s respect and care for our village and for the horticultural excellence and environmentally friendly gardening which can be enjoyed throughout Copshaw Holm.
