7Stanes Mountain Biking At Newcastleton
7 Stanes Mountain Biking Scottish Borders

Caddrouns (Blue Trail)

At 6km the recently upgraded Caddrouns singletrack offers a great descent, which twists and turns down through the forest round bermed corners and over bridges.

This leads to Pouter Lampert - a 2km section of singletrack through one of the most scenic parts of the forest. Starting with a gentle climb through the trees (shared with one of the forest's walking routes), the trail heads downhill which dips and weaves through the forest across gullies, round turns, along boardwalks and over (optional) rock steps. Designed with the less experienced rider in mind and perfect for that family mountain-biking experience the trail gradients are kept low and the surfaces are wide and smooth.

Linns Trail (Purple)

This 8km route shares some parts with the red route but takes you up through a steep forest climb past the Border Stane before a flat forest road to Tweedenhead Cottage. The route runs past the skills area and downhill to the trail head.

Red Route

For the more experienced and daring the 16 km Red route provides fast, narrow singletrack, bridge crossings and boardwalks. Starting with a brief forest road climb from the car park you enter to the Hidden Valley which swoops down through the forest with fast, exhilarating descents punctuated by short sharp climbs. With numerous bridges and boardwalks and a black grade North Shore line across a pond, the singletrack seems to go on for ever, but eventually you'll pop out on a forest road and the start of the main climb of the route known as the Linns. After a couple of kilometres, you reach the Bog. Here the trail plummets into the forest before crossing the Tweeden Burn for a gentle section of boardwalk across the bog. A short, steep climb later takes you to dead Man's Quarry Climb. With a steady climb you reach Swarfe Quarry a fantastic descent down Swarf Hill.

North Shore Area (Skills area)

Built by the Newcastleton Trail Warriors (volunteer group) this is a highly challenging area for experienced riders who want a thrill. With a qualifier section this area offers a variety of timber trails with jumps turns and drops! Not for the faint hearted!
